The art of the curvilinear ROUNDFOLDING is an innovation for the 21st century. This new approach to folding produces warped planes and shell forms which lend themselves well to mask making. With the help of a knife point, a rounded fold gains both elegance and efficiency over the straight line flat fold. The external force used to activate the first bend, spring loads the arched paper and that energy is transmitted to the next set of complementary folds along an intact sheet much like a ball is bounced around in a pinball machine.

My challenge in seeking the full potential of this technology was to try to portray the twelve members of the Chinese zodiac. The series concluded with the mask for the Year of the Horse in 1990.

A booklet ,”cavex ROUNDFOLDING: The Mask Unfolds”, and its accompanying DVD records some twenty years of the evolution of this art form.
