SYNCHRONICITY IS THE ART OF RUNNING INTO THINGS

November, 2007                    Carol Adrienne, Ph.D.

The other day, I decided to call my daughter, Sigrid, as we hadn’t talked for a couple of weeks.  Just as I was thinking about picking up the phone, it rang.  It was Sigrid!  I decided to share two other synchronicity stories, which came to me this week.  The first is from my friend, Cori Brett, a golf writer who lives in Arizona. She sent me this email:

A golf writing colleague of mine had a sudden stroke and we've all been worried about him.  I've been thinking about how I wanted to call him and wondering what sort of help I could offer.  Last night we were at the National League Playoff Game between our Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies.  It was a sellout crowd of more than 48,000.  Joe and I have great seats, on the aisle.  In the seventh inning, I suddenly saw John coming slowly up the aisle, with the help of a cane.  I couldn't believe it! Naturally I jumped up and spoke to him and will be seeing him soon.  What are the chances of that in a crowd of 48,000?

Another story comes from Jenifer Beles, an American living in Geneva, Switzerland.

I wanted to recount my story to you, regarding a synchronistic event in my life, which has impacted and helped me to discover my true purpose in this life:

Since I was very young, I have had a 'gut feeling' that writing should be a part of my life. However, secretly, I had my doubts. To be honest, I was afraid to admit my true passion, so I chose a career that seemed to fit me, but that did not involve creative writing at all.

Over the past summer, I became increasingly frustrated with my job.  One day I made a loud announcement to the universe, asking to know what my life's purpose truly was. I was guided to your book, [The Purpose of Your Life,] which I read with great fervor within a period of three days. After reading your book and doing most of the exercises, I realized that writing was truly important to me.

So there it was, I finally knew what my purest intention on this earth was. I made a very clear and loud declaration to the universe, that my intention was to write, and requested that they bring me a 'mentor-writer'.

Being a bit of an insomniac by nature, I was up late one evening and began channel surfing. I came across a documentary on the author, Joan Didion.  Even though she is an award-winning writer, I knew very little about her. She intrigued me and I watched intently, taking note of the books she had written over the past decade.

The next day the most remarkable turn of events proved to me that I was on track.

That morning I decided to go for a jog in the countryside.  After awhile, I saw an elderly man walking his dog, a chocolate-colored Labrador. I have a weakness for these gorgeous creatures, having had two black ones of my own. After stopping to greet and nuzzle the dogs, I didn’t feel in the mood to jog anymore.  I had the feeling it would be nice to walk along with the man for awhile. I asked if I could accompany him on his walk. He very sweetly agreed.

The man turned out to be a journalist!  We spent an hour talking about dogs, life, and writing.  He writes opera reviews for the cultural section of a local newspaper. I guess this explained why his dog's name was Figaro! We ended the walk and I headed back home.

The Joan Didion documentary was still floating around in my head, so I decided to do an Internet search to see what other information I could find about her. I clicked on the very first link I found. It was an interview of Joan Didion in the magazine 'Le Figaro'. This was a like a lightning bolt for me. I began writing that day, and I haven't stopped since.

I am absolutely positive that this is what I should be doing right now. Whenever I lose faith or motivation, I get a clear, distinct message that puts me right back on my track.

I just ordered Didion's book: The Year of Magical Thinking (2005.)  I received it on the 8th of October and settled into my bathtub to start reading it.  In the first chapter, she writes: 'It is now, as I begin to write this, October 4th, 2004, 11:11 am'.  Guess what time and date I ordered this book on--October 4th, 2007 11:11 am.

I do not believe this to be a coincidence. This is the universe's gentle way of reminding me that I am here, in the right place, the right time, and absolutely where I should be. I am more sensitive to these synchronicities now, and I am certainly more aware of them today.

I will finish this book I am working on; I just do not know when. But I am sure I will get ever-present nudging until it is complete. So if you see a book called: 'Walking with Figaro' out in the bookstores soon, you will know that an angel is very close by.

PS  Carol, you asked me to look up Figaro's character in 'The Marriage of Figaro'. Well, he is the valet/butler of Count Almaviva.  In the opera, he outsmarts his boss and marries the love of his life!

Jenifer wrote that she would love to hear from anyone else who has had similar synchronistic experiences providing such exact answers to a question.  I would love to receive such stories as well.  Jenifer’s email address is:  jeniferbeles@hotmail.com.
A Happy and Synchronistic November!
